My Interview as a Web Designer
Posted on June 12th, 2009 in general | 4 Comments »
I was recently interviewed as a Web designer by a prior student for a project she’s doing. I thought it would be fun to share my answers here.
- Why do you feel it’s important for web designers to know HTML and CSS coding when there are programs such as DreamWeaver?
- BECAUSE THAT IS YOUR TOOL SET! It’s like asking a painter to paint without brushes or a photographer without film. Oh wait… LOL I’m only kidding. It’s important because to understand how to design for the web effectively you need to really understand how it works technically. I may be biased as I started as a web developer not designer but understanding coding gives you a huge advantage and I’ll argue that no one will hire a WEB designer who doesn’t understand how to code at least a little.
- Favorite websites?
-
Those are the ones that popped into my head first for some reason.
- How do you feel about blogging sites?
- Blogging has changed the landscape of the web forever. It’s given everyone, regardless of technical knowledge, the ability to create content and communicate online. I think it’s simply WONDERFUL!
- Where do you think the future in web design is headed?
- Web Design is ever changing. We must react to so many things like new technology and user experience levels. The future is not easily predicted but I’m sure in 5 years web design will be vastly different then it is today just as it is from 5 years ago.
- How would you define your personal design style?
- I’m simple, clean and to the point. The most important aspect of most web pages is the content and it should be easily accessible.
- What makes a good website?
- Easy to access relevant content, simple to understand navigation, clean design.
- Do you have any web design pet peeves?
- Drop down menus.. HATE THEM.
- Are you self-run or do you work for a company?
- Both. :)
- How much schooling did you go through to become a web designer?
- There was no "web designer" options when I was in school. I have a B.S. in Management Information Systems and a M.S. in Instructional Technology. Most of my web skills are self taught.
- Do you think a college education is important in this field?
- I do. For experience and exposure to a broad range of skills. Part of being a web designer is understanding the needs of the audience. It’s easier to understand those needs if you can relate to them on some level. Having a broad range of experience and knowledge to pull from helps immensely.
- Any advice for future designers/web enthusiasts or general knowledge about yourself you wanna share? :)
- It’s all about loving what you do! Love design, be interested in the newest web trends, stay curious and learn something new every day!

Have You Lost Your Creativity?
Posted on May 24th, 2009 in general | 1 Comment »

When I was in college I took a Computer Art class as an undergraduate. Back then Graphic Design was so new, there wasn’t degree programs in it. There’s wasn’t Computer Graphic departments. There was just one class offered by the art department that taught students how to make art with a computer (pretty controlversial stuff at the time.) It was by far my favorite class. It was creative. It was technical. It was fun! Read the rest of this entry »
Quick Wordcamp Recap
Posted on May 18th, 2009 in blogging | 2 Comments »
Saturday was a fabulous day of Wordpress goodness as I attended Wordcamp. After listening to opening remarks form Aaron Brazell and then a controversial keynote presentation by Anil Dash (a Type Pad guy at a Wordpress Conference??) I was psyched to start the sessions. First up was the Thesis Theme presented by Brad Williams. I was excited to learn more about it as I’ve been considering purchasing it for some time but after the talk I decided it’s not for me. I like to dabble with my theme files too much and I enjoy the complete control I have by doing so. Being that I mostly developing for myself I’ll stick with customization. Even so, I was captivated by the concept of the theme, just look how serious I am! (thanks to Casey for the photo!)

Then I enjoyed a wonderful presentation on Search Engine Optimization by Sri Nagubandi and John Shehata. Read the rest of this entry »
Embracing my Geek-ness
Posted on May 15th, 2009 in general | 4 Comments »
I declared myself a geek waaaaaay back in college. It all stated innocent enough. I didn’t have a computer growing up so I reluctantly took a computer class in college. We learned the basics, all Unix of course as Microsoft hadn’t taken over the world yet. We surfed the web via Lynx and Gopher. That was until Mosaic and soon Netscape took over. I remember using talk to chat with my friends and cursing vi when my professors insisted on using it even though Pico was way easier to use. Read the rest of this entry »
The Web Really is Us.
Posted on May 5th, 2009 in html | 4 Comments »
I used to show this video in my classes. It may be a little too geek for you that is unless you’ve seen it already. Then you are "one of us." ;~P
I do have to say I’m not particulary fond of buzzwords. Web 2.0? 3.0? who cares. I just love sitting back and watching us evolve online. It fascinated me.
