Hi Roni..

Good Morning…

I am a single mom and need additional income…Can you tell me about how much do you get paid for these advertising ads? Did they contact you or did you contact them.

Thanks…I have alot of college debt from raising 3 kids by myself and need to find a way to supplement my current job…Thanks so much…love the look of your site….don’t know if I can pull it off but with this information it will let me know if I should even try..

Thanks so much

Jan Lange

Hi Jan,

Unfortunately earning an income from a blog takes a lot of time and hard work. It took me 2 years to earn any money that could even be considered supplimenting my income and I have a background in web development giving me a slight edge over other bloggers.

I don’t want to discourage you from trying just want you to have a realistic goal.

Sites like this make it sounds easy but it’s at least a part time job if you want to attract readers and build a name for yourself online. Here’s an older post that lists many of the sources I use to generate income.

Also, here’s a post I wrote about this very subject earlier this year and another on some of the revenue sources I use.

Hope that helps and good luck on whatever you decide to do!

-Roni

P.S. Any other bloggers like to chime in? I’d love to hear your advice for Jan.

It has taken me almost two years to start earning anything, and what I earn now is barely part time pay. Monetizing a blog is not the easiest thing in the world to do. You’d be better off going and getting a part time job. But it is the greatest hobby if it is something you are passionate about doing it without the money aspect.

My opinion is that if you start a blog to make money, you’re in it for the wrong reasons. You need to genuinely enjoy blogging and be passionate about what you write about, otherwise it will show through in your writing. If you don’t like it, you’ll probably burn out in a few months anyway.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with making money off of a blog, so good luck! Just remember that blogging is like basketball. A few people are making big bucks in the NBA, but most everyone else is playing for fun in their driveways.

I completely agree with both the ladies-

I think that if you’re passionate about what you blog about then you can find a way to make it a source of income, but from what I can tell, the pressure of doing this takes away a lot of the joy.

I just now, almost two years after I first started blogging, added (Foodbuzz) ads to my page. I’m conflicted about this. I want my site to be a place to share and be open about struggles and accomplishments and not focus my attention on “hits.”

I think Jan should add some tasteful ads to her page if that’s what she feels is best, and use the extra dollars to take her children out for a fun day when she accumulates enough. Depending on that money for anything else can lead to some dire financial situations (I think).

    GL Jan!

One thing that Jen doesn’t tell us is whether or not she already has a blog or a site. If she does, it could be worth a few dollars a month to throw some ads up. The actual time required to blog really is in the blogging itself. Once you get your site to a reasonable point and have the ads up the rest is in your posts. Not that posts don’t take a long time. The more you put into them the more you get out of them. But my recommendation would be if you have a blog that you wouldn’t mind having lots of eyeballs looking at, the go ahead and monetize. It is at least worth a few bucks a month. Momma needs a new pair of shoes!
