I was recently interviewed as a Web designer by a prior student for a project she’s doing. I thought it would be fun to share my answers here.
- Why do you feel it’s important for web designers to know HTML and CSS coding when there are programs such as DreamWeaver?
- BECAUSE THAT IS YOUR TOOL SET! It’s like asking a painter to paint without brushes or a photographer without film. Oh wait… LOL I’m only kidding. It’s important because to understand how to design for the web effectively you need to really understand how it works technically. I may be biased as I started as a web developer not designer but understanding coding gives you a huge advantage and I’ll argue that no one will hire a WEB designer who doesn’t understand how to code at least a little.
- Favorite websites?
-
Those are the ones that popped into my head first for some reason.
- How do you feel about blogging sites?
- Blogging has changed the landscape of the web forever. It’s given everyone, regardless of technical knowledge, the ability to create content and communicate online. I think it’s simply WONDERFUL!
- Where do you think the future in web design is headed?
- Web Design is ever changing. We must react to so many things like new technology and user experience levels. The future is not easily predicted but I’m sure in 5 years web design will be vastly different then it is today just as it is from 5 years ago.
- How would you define your personal design style?
- I’m simple, clean and to the point. The most important aspect of most web pages is the content and it should be easily accessible.
- What makes a good website?
- Easy to access relevant content, simple to understand navigation, clean design.
- Do you have any web design pet peeves?
- Drop down menus.. HATE THEM.
- Are you self-run or do you work for a company?
- Both. :)
- How much schooling did you go through to become a web designer?
- There was no "web designer" options when I was in school. I have a B.S. in Management Information Systems and a M.S. in Instructional Technology. Most of my web skills are self taught.
- Do you think a college education is important in this field?
- I do. For experience and exposure to a broad range of skills. Part of being a web designer is understanding the needs of the audience. It’s easier to understand those needs if you can relate to them on some level. Having a broad range of experience and knowledge to pull from helps immensely.
- Any advice for future designers/web enthusiasts or general knowledge about yourself you wanna share? :)
- It’s all about loving what you do! Love design, be interested in the newest web trends, stay curious and learn something new every day!
